Old Point Loma Lighthouse, San Diego

4.7
#5 of 32 in Historic Sites in San Diego
Lighthouse · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Built in 1855, Old Point Loma Lighthouse once helped boats safely navigate San Diego Bay, but now serves as a maritime museum and a lookout point with expansive views of the Pacific Ocean. The museum details its past watch duties, as well as what life was like for the operator and the families who lived there. You can even meet "Captain Israel," the famous character who worked as lighthouse keeper for 21 years. Stroll the grounds, admire the view, or climb down to the shore below and try your hand at tide pooling. There are many great photo opportunities, so don’t forget your camera. The area is frequented by patches of heavy fog, so check the weather before visiting. • I haven't seen many lighthouses in my life, but I thought it was great seeing this one. It is awesome seeing the large light in the house beside it. I liked the walking path to get to the lighthouse.....  more »
  • This is a short drive to the point of Point Loma. The naval cemetery will cause you to pause and reflect along the way. Great views of the harbor and surrounding area.  more »

  • A captivating restoration of the original lighthouse, furnished and arranged as if still occupied. There is a thorough and helpful presentation on the workings of the lighthouse in an adjacent building, too. Everything is put in helpful context and perspective. It’s also a beautiful vantage point to look into the harbor and out to the sea. The combination of historic character and natural beauty typical of the best national monument sites.
  • A great place to check out! This historic information was wonderful. The lighthouse has been very well kept up and is a beautiful site to see. There is a nice hike up to it, but offers solid walking paths if a stroller or wheel chair is needed. Beautiful 360 degree views from the lighthouse area.
