Rebuilt after an earthquake, de Young Museum can resist seismic shaking with its striking twisted tower. This modern complex in Golden Gate Park holds collections of American and contemporary international art. Archives of American art dating back to the 17th century, including textiles and costumes, make the museum exceptional. Textiles come from as far away as Turkey, and the costumes showcase early fashions from designers such as Christian Dior. We originally went to the de Young Museum to see the views from the top floor of the building. They are incredible! Since we arrived on a Friday evening, admission was free for the regular exhibits, s...  more »

It is a place full of culture, artistic works of various communities of North America and central and some of Africa can be appreciated. When I went they were a hippie event with great music and a fun atmosphere. Admission is free and if you go with time you reach to explore it all, it's not so big.

One of the main art museums in the city based within the park and featuring a free observation tower! Very modern and the building's huge however most exhibitions are ticketed and there isn't as much to see as other similar large art museums. Sadly we were a week early for the big summer exhibition so we skipped the exhibitions and had lunch in the cafe and visited the observation tower. Check what's on before visiting and if you head into the park definitely visit the observation tower! 🌁

Parking can be limited on the weekends so take a Lyft. Go up into the tower. It's free. Subscribe today and become a member and support the arts. Summer evenings there is a full bar and live music every Friday night. Party on!

$15 is a pretty good deal for the wide selection of exhibits you get to see. The building itself is very nice with a cool layout. Observation tower is a nice touch before or after you've been looking at the art.

A very beautiful museum. Definitely one of the to go to in SF. If you've gone once you've seen a solid permanent collection with worldwide pieces of different cultures. I feel some pieces are much more interesting than others. Apart from that there are other exhibits (non-permanent ones) that I feel are very well chosen. I've had very gratifying experiences on the non-permanent exhibits. The store is lovely. Usual beautiful, colorful yet expensive stock. And the cafeteria is delicious yet with simple dishes.

Lots of different attractions to visit if you have lots of time. We were limited to time so we decided on the De Young Museum. Lots of art work to see. Adult fee was $15 per person. Children 17 and under are free. We recommend parking in the structures. Street parking is also available but beware of theft in the area. Park in a high traffic area if possible.

Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.
