Ghirardelli Square, San Francisco

Once a hub of chocolate manufacturing, Ghirardelli Square now features a mix of shops and restaurants within the former chocolate factory. The real treat is the Ghirardelli soda fountain and chocolate shop where you can savor hot-fudge sundaes and stock up on the famous chocolate to take home. The Original Ghirardelli Ice Cream and Chocolate Manufactory is still here with the original equipment on display. • Excellent!! Please make sure to stop by if you're a chocolate lover! There is so much of variety, and great gift options. Staff is friendly and give you samples to make your decision making process easier. The ice cream bar is phenomenal. We had the banana split, cookie sundae and strawberry shake. All were exceptional. Best part was seeing how chocolate is made in the main building. There is a Pet shop, a stationery shop and a restaurant in the square as well. Definitely would recommend to others as it was one of our favorite parts of the trip.
  • It's worth making the trek up to Ghirardelli Square just to get some free chocolate samples. Another Ghirardelli shop opened on the other end of the square, so you can walk from one shop to the other and get two free samples now :) Plus, the shops always smell AMAZING. The chocolate is delicious too, though a little pricey, but it's worth it for a premium brand. Otherwise, there are some cute shops and restaurants in the Square, but it doesn't ever feel as "happening" as Fisherman's Wharf or Pier 39. It may be a little more upscale and thus may attract fewer people because there are fewer attractions. You can see great views of the Bay from the hill, though.
  • The chocolate shop at this location is wonderful. Try the fudge sundae in the glass cup. It's large and the milk chocolate is incredible. There's a marketplace where you can get a wide variety of packaged chocolates, and a couple of restaurants. It's very close to the Maritime park as well. It would have been nice to see a factory tour of some sort but at least there was a small area where you can see the basic steps about how the chocolate is made.
  • Very sad to see just a handful of stores, this place was so fun at one time. You could spend hours going to the fun assortment of shops, the only store I enjoyed was the fund raising store with used and handmade goods, reasonably priced and nice people. Chocolate store way over priced. The mermaid fountain gone.
  • I was pleasantly surprised with the variety of deserts. This is a dangerous place. There are lots of yummy sugary stuff. Incredible ice cream, chocolate, etc. Good places to sit with a view. Is you want to hey your sugar fix, then this is the place to go. You won't be disappointed. The only downside is that it is popular which means it is usually crowded. Otherwise, it's a great place. If you are on the San Francisco waterfront, I recommend visiting Ghirardelli Square.

Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.
