Lombard Street, San Francisco

Venture along the zigzagging curves and steep hills of Lombard Street, the “crookedest” street in the world. Located in the heart of San Francisco, the winding street zigzags downhill past a number of historical Victorian homes and colorful gardens, making it one of the city’s most iconic streets. Take the cable car to the top of the hill and then wander down the street on foot to stop and admire the stately mansions, blooming flowers, and stunning views of the surrounding city. • After seeing so many times this picture, if you go to San Francisco and Miss traverse on foot or in vehicle this street, you've lost your money. That can never not miss. If you prefer to explore it on foot, like myself, well check up with taxi drivers, ideally, take it up and down, otherwise is not for those who are out of shape.

  • I was walking towards pier 39 when suddenly I read "lombard st" looked (literally) it upwards and I started to walk, the last section is very, very inclined, but come and see this twisted stretch of street and cars making maneuvers to get thought about how much that was worth the Pena, I undertook the return that was much more simple

  • Lots of tourists walking and photographing this impressive street. Everything is well kept and the car traffic was minimal. We took cable car to top and then walked down. A few blocks from the bottom ...  more »

  • One among the great sight to visit when you go to San Francisco. Its the most crooked street but a beautiful one due to mini gardens to the areas on the sides which have lots of hydrangeas and other flowers. The traffic moves really slowly down that street, but there are footpaths on the sides you can walk along too. I was lucky that there was no traffic when I visited it. Speed to vehicle is limited to 5-7kmph.
  • A unique sight to visit when you go to San Francisco! A regular street has been converted beautifully into a narrow zigzag street by adding mini gardens to the areas on the sides which have lots of hydrangeas and other flowers. The traffic moves really slowly down that street, but there are footpaths on the sides you can walk along too.
  • It is such a neat place. The Hairpin turns and the Beautiful Homes it's really just a cool little section of San Francisco. I feel bad for the people that live there because there were crowds on street corners throughout the short drive down the street. And we went during the week. But it definitely is interesting and something different to experience.
  • Interesting one-way street with super sharp turns. Made the hike up (walking) the slope, it's quite fun! Driving down is quite an experience, you've got to ride the brake the whole way down going like 5-7 mph. There can be line depending on the time of day that you go. I've waited 15 minutes before and I've also been and not had a line.
  • A cool, sweet street that happens to be the windiest in the world. Super cool to walk or drive down this street. It is extremely busy because it is so famous but def. a must see. Drive slow if you're driving and enjoy!

Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.
