#6 of 59 in Outdoors in Seattle
Take in the classic view of the lighthouse in Discovery Park, which marks the westernmost point of the city. Set out on the 4.5 km (2.8 mi) Discovery Park Loop Trail, the main route leading to all the park's paths. The 19.01 km (11.81 mi) of pathways weave through woods and grassy prairies and past beaches. If you'd like to drive to the beach, you'll need a permit, which you can pick up at the Environmental Learning Center near the east parking lot. Stop by the cultural center in the park to enjoy art and music events in the inspiring, natural setting. • One of my favorite places in the area. My ideal vacation is hiking or rappelling. I headed to Seattle and did all the typical touristy stuff. Day 3, I had to get out of the city. Discovery Park was a recommendation so that I didn't have to drive 2 hours. LOVED IT. The visitor center gal wasn't super helpful but I figured things out. I walked to South Beach along the tree surrounded path and fell in love with the world again. The sound of birds chirping and the trees moving in the wind was exactly what I needed. Parts of the trail have some challenge to them but not unreasonable. I recommend tennis shoes. The views are outstanding. I only walked about 4 miles in total but felt accomplished and rebooted from the madness of the city.
  • Awesome. Sprawling former Army property. Amazing views. 3- mile loop trail for hiking and jogging. You're rewarded with a bluff-top view across Puget Sound to the Olympic National Park. Huge open field that's great for kites. Can also hike down to lighthouse. Restrooms and water fountains, but no food concessions in the park.
