Visit Takayama Jinya, the only surviving "Jinya," a government office during the Edo period. The structure was built in the late 17th century to be used by officials from Edo to govern the Hida region around Takayama. Reconstructed in 1816 and used as a public office building until 1969, it's the only building of its type that remains in Japan. Step inside to explore the chambers, evocative of the Japanese lifestyle of the period. Wander through the workspaces, kitchens, and meeting rooms, or hang out in the peaceful courtyard. Work out when and for how long to visit Takayama Jinya and other Takayama attractions using our handy Takayama tour itinerary tool.

  • It was interesting to see how this building used to function and to learn about the local history. Beautiful garden.

  • An interesting historical building that sheds some light on how an Edo period administrative office operated. Access to a succinct audio guide is available via QR codes in a few locations. Some information is displayed in English. I particularly appreciated the details on taxation and peasant revolt against it in a region directly controlled by the Tokugawa Shogunate.
  • This is a fascinating historical site. Definitely worth a visit. The city of takayama has innumerable historical and religious sites and locations. If you're going to plan a Japan trip, try to include this City.
