Create an itinerary including Maori Rock Carvings
Hop on a ferry to view the impressive Maori Rock Carvings, a collection of individual carvings into the rock face of Mine Bay standing over 10 m (33 ft) high, a gift to the town of Taupo. The work of master carver Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell and Jonathan Randell and completed in the 1970s, each carving is unique unto itself, with its own story, meaning, and significance. The carvings can only been seen by water, so opt to take a guided boat tour or get a closer look with a guided kayaking tour. The more comfortable option of the two is the ferryboat, where visitors can sit back and relax while munching on snacks and listening to the informative guides. • You need to do a boat cruise to see these or have your own boat but they are well worth it. They are in a lovely sheltered bay and well worth the trip.

  • Everything about this cruise was great, from the skipper and her crew to the on board coffee and muffin . The commentary was really interesting and I learnt more about lake Taupo on this trip than...

  • A very unique carving on the side of the rock cliff. Has a history story to tell. It's a monument that I feel needs to be experienced on cruise tours so you are able to learn of the history and significance. It is possible to visit this Maori Rock carving but only if you have your own boat to cruise out to see or feeling active and adventurous and want to kayak or jet ski out to its location. It takes approximately 10 minutes across the lake from the towns boat Harbour. Shorter if there's boat jetties, by Acacia Bay etc. A great tour company that does these live commentary tours to the Rock is Chris Jolly Outdoors. Or other tour companies include Ernest Kemp and Barbary Yacht Tours. Worth a look. It's a must-do activity to do when visiting Taupo.
  • Excellent day had. Love the water. Pockets of warm water bubbling up from the bottom. Very relaxing
