Vienna, Austria — 3 nights

The cultural, economic, and political center of the country, Vienna has developed from its early Celtic and Roman roots into a medieval and Baroque city, with an old town that was designated a World Heritage Site in 2001.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Maria Theresia Denkmal and Heeresgeschichtliches Museum. There's still lots to do: step into the grandiose world of Schonbrunn Palace, don't miss a visit to Rathausplatz, pause for some serene contemplation at St. Stephen's Cathedral, and admire the masterpieces at Belvedere Palace.

For where to stay, maps, traveler tips, and tourist information, you can read our Vienna trip maker.

You might consider the city of Budapest, divided by the Danube River into two distinctive cities--Buda and Pest--to be essentially one large World Heritage Site.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Wine Tours & Tastings and Budapest Pinball Museum. There's much more to do: let your taste buds guide you at a local gastronomic tour, head off the coast to Margaret Island, pause for some photo ops at Statue of St Stephen, and steep yourself in history at Fisherman's Bastion.
