began operation in 1909 and, despite many threats to its preservation, continues to serve sailors today. The state historic park that houses the lighthouse boasts several historical buildings and wide Pacific Ocean views. You can access the light station buildings via two walks. The easier of the two starts at the south end of the parking lot and is paved. The dirt path located at the north end traverses grassland and coastal prairie. By the lighthouse, you can find three restored lightkeeper homes, one of which has been transformed into a period museum. Its artifacts and displays illustrate the lighthouse's history and provide a glimpse of local history. It was a hike from the parking lot; however, the day was beautiful and perfect for a nice walk. Still functional and a beautiful area for a picnic!

The hike down to the lighthouse was very nice. We thought the large 5$ donation sign outside of the so called museum/gift shop was way too tacky for us to go in. Had they just had a small donation...

It is a little trek from parking lot down to light house (sign says 1/2 mile). It does have a little road for handicap access so if you cant walk, it is still easily accessible! Beautiful lighthouse and the surrounding buildings are well kept. The lighthouse keepers house is a great insight to life then. The view is amazing and the path down has signs and trivia. (But no answers, so have a phone ready to research it)

Flat paths to spectacular and wild, frothy sea. Saw many whales right from cliff tops. Seal family cavorting in water below my feet. Lovely place to stay, especially if slightly handicapped. No beach access. Very steep cliffs. If balance challenged, bring hiking sticks. Everyone visits and parks quite a way off in public lot but if you overnite at the lighthouse, you drive right to the cliffs. Accommodations much less primitive than expected!!!
